Overview
Why Urumqi?
Urumqi is the capital of Xinjiang and one of the most geographically isolated major cities in the world β further from any ocean than almost any other city on Earth. It's a frontier city with a fascinating blend of Han Chinese, Uyghur, Kazakh, and other cultures. For adventurous travelers, it's unlike anywhere else in China.

Getting There
Airport
Urumqi Diwopu International Airport (URC) is the main hub for Xinjiang and Central Asia. Direct flights connect to most major Chinese cities, as well as Almaty, Bishkek, Tashkent, and Istanbul. It's about 20 minutes from the city center.
Train
High-speed rail connects Urumqi to Lanzhou and onward to Xi'an and beyond, but journey times are long (Lanzhou is about 12 hours). The rail experience across the Gobi Desert is spectacular β worth doing once for the scenery alone.
Getting Around
Metro & Buses
Urumqi has a small but functional metro system with 3 lines covering the main areas. Buses are cheap and go everywhere. Didi operates in the city. Note: Urumqi operates on Beijing time (UTC+8) despite being geographically in UTC+6 territory β locals often run 2 hours behind official time informally.
Time Zone Note
Official time is Beijing time (UTC+8), but many locals β especially Uyghurs β operate on "Xinjiang time" (UTC+6), which is 2 hours behind. Restaurants and local businesses may list hours in Xinjiang time. Always clarify which time is being used when making arrangements.
Highlights
International Grand Bazaar
One of the largest bazaars in Central Asia β a sprawling market with Uyghur food, spices, dried fruits, handicrafts, and textiles. The architecture is distinctly Central Asian. This is the best place to experience the non-Han side of Urumqi. Don't miss the lamb skewers (kaorou) and nang bread.
Tian Shan & Heavenly Lake
Tianchi (Heavenly Lake) is 110km east of the city β a stunning alpine lake at 1,910m elevation surrounded by snow-capped peaks. It's a 2-hour drive and one of Xinjiang's most iconic sights. Open MayβOctober; winter closes the roads.
Culture & Practical Notes
Food
Xinjiang food is spectacular β lamb-heavy, spice-forward, and very different from Eastern Chinese cuisine. Must-try: dapanji (big plate chicken), laghman (hand-pulled noodles), polo (Uyghur rice pilaf), and freshly baked nang. Halal food is everywhere.
Practical Notes for Foreigners
Foreigners visiting Xinjiang should be aware that registration requirements are stricter here. Always register at your hotel within 24 hours of arrival. Keep your passport on you. Plan ahead and stay informed on current travel advisories for Xinjiang.
