Getting Set Up

Essential Apps

Six apps every foreigner needs in China โ€” ordered by priority. Install them before you land.

Install WeChat and Alipay before you arrive. Both require phone verification, and some steps are easier with an overseas number. Don't wait until you land.
WeChat

Messaging ยท Payments ยท Everything
#1

China runs on WeChat. Messaging, mobile payments, work groups, ID verification, mini-programs โ€” all in one app. If you only install one thing, make it this.

Alipay
Alipay
Payments ยท Services ยท Transport
#2

The second payment app you need. Restaurants, shops, transit, and utilities all accept Alipay. Foreigners can now link international Visa and Mastercard directly.

DiDi
DiDi
Ride-Hailing
#3

Uber doesn't operate in China. DiDi is how everyone gets around โ€” set your destination in the app and go, no Chinese required. Works in every major city. DiDi is also available as a mini-program inside WeChat and Alipay, but the standalone app lets you monitor your ride while multitasking without switching apps.

Amap
Amap Global
Maps ยท Navigation ยท Transit
#4

Google Maps is blocked in China and not up to date even with a VPN. Apple Maps is also unreliable here. Amap Global is the standard โ€” turn-by-turn navigation, real-time transit, and walking directions, with English support built in.

Discovery ยท Social ยท Reviews
#5

Part Instagram, part review site. The best place to discover restaurants, cafes, and hidden spots โ€” especially from other foreigners living in China. The algorithm is surprisingly good.

Dianping

Restaurant Reviews ยท Deals
#6

China's Yelp โ€” menus, ratings, photos, and deals for restaurants across every city. Mostly in Chinese, but the photos alone make it useful for picking where to eat.
