Chongqing

Chongqing is one of the world's largest cities and one of its most dramatic — built across steep hills where roads, railways, and rivers stack on top of each other. The "mountain city" is humid, foggy, and intense, with a famously bold food culture and a skyline that looks like science fiction at night. It's also the gateway to Yangtze River cruises through the Three Gorges.

Chongqing Jiangbei International (CKG) is the main airport, north of the city, with broad domestic coverage and growing international routes. Metro and the airport rail link connect it to the center, and Didi is easy for door-to-door trips.

Chongqing's high-speed stations connect to Chengdu in around an hour and to Xi'an, Wuhan, and beyond. The city is also the starting point for Yangtze River cruises downstream through the Three Gorges — a classic multi-day trip.

Chongqing's rail transit is an attraction in itself — the famous monorail lines climb the hills and, at Liziba station, run straight through a residential high-rise. The network is extensive and clever about the terrain, linking the major districts and rail stations. Pay with Alipay, WeChat, or a transit QR code.

Didi is the default for getting around, though the layered roads can confuse first-timers (and GPS). The Yangtze River Cableway is a fun way to cross between banks. Be ready for hills and staircases — Chongqing is not a flat city, and there are very few bikes for that reason.

The central peninsula where the two rivers meet — Jiefangbei is the main downtown and shopping core, and nearby Hongya Cave is the iconic stilted, glowing riverside complex you've seen in photos. Dense, dramatic, and the heart of the city.

North of the river — home to Guanyinqiao's busy shopping streets, newer high-rises, nightlife, and a lot of residential life. A popular, well-connected base.

On the south bank, with the Nanshan hills above the city and the Nanbin Road riverfront below — the best vantage points for Chongqing's nighttime skyline.

Chongqing is the birthplace of fiery, oil-and-chili málà hot pot, and locals take it seriously. Expect numbing Sichuan peppercorns, a cloud of chilies, and a communal, sweaty, joyful meal. Order a "mandarin duck" (split) pot if you want a mild side — and pace yourself.
